Hardside luggage, judged by the shell that matters

Hardside luggage has quietly become the default, and for good reasons: a molded shell protects fragile contents better than fabric, wipes clean after a grimy carousel, resists a downpour, and photographs like a premium object. But "hardside" covers a huge quality range, and the single word that separates a bag that lasts a decade from one that cracks in a season is the shell material.

Polycarbonate is the material to want. It flexes under impact and springs back, which is why it survives being thrown by a baggage handler; it is lighter than it looks and holds a premium finish. ABS is cheaper and it is what most bargain-bin hardsides are made of — lighter on the wallet but more brittle, more prone to cracking in cold weather, and heavier for the same strength. A polycarbonate/ABS blend sits in between. Aluminum is the luxury outlier: nearly indestructible, gorgeous, heavy, expensive, and it dents rather than flexes. After the shell, the wheels decide your day. Dual spinner wheels (eight wheels total, in four housings) glide sideways through a narrow aisle and take the weight off your wrist; single spinners are cheaper but wear faster.
