Luggage sets, ranked on real per-piece value

A matched set is the cheapest way to own a carry-on and a checked bag at once — if the value is real. We rank on cost-per-piece, weight and warranty, not on how the box looks.

A luggage set is the highest-value purchase in this whole category when you get it right: a matched 2- or 3-piece set almost always costs less than buying the same pieces separately, and you end up with a carry-on and a checked bag that actually look like they belong together. The catch is that "set" is also where the most padding hides — an eye-catching sticker price can mean thin shells, noisy wheels, or a third piece you will never use.

The honest way to judge a set is per-piece: take the real price, divide by the number of pieces you would genuinely pack, and compare that against a single bag of the same build. On that math a good hardside 3-piece set frequently beats buying one mid-tier carry-on alone. We rank on that number, on the combined weight (a "lightweight" set that is only light in the carry-on is not lightweight), on whether the pieces nest for storage, and on the warranty, because a set is a bet that all three pieces survive — and a ten-year or limited- lifetime warranty is the manufacturer taking part of that bet with you.

Two structural choices decide the rest. Hardside sets (polycarbonate or ABS) give you a uniform, protective, wipe-clean shell across every piece — our hardside-set breakoutis where most buyers should start. Softside sets flex, overstuff, and add outer pockets, and tend to be the better airport-workhorse for frequent flyers. Size spread matters too: a classic 3-piece set is usually a ~20" carry-on, a ~24" medium check, and a ~28" large check, and the medium is the piece most people actually reach for on a one-week trip. The mistake to avoid is buying a big set for the big number and only ever using one bag. If that is you, skip the set and buy a great standalone carry-on instead — we will say so on the page.
