For most travelers, polycarbonate is the hardside material to buy: it flexes under impact and springs back, resists cracking, and is light for its strength. ABS is cheaper but more brittle and heavier for the same strength — fine for occasional use, not for frequent flying. Aluminum is nearly indestructible, beautiful and expensive, but heavy and it dents rather than flexes. The differences are real and worth understanding before you spend.

Polycarbonate: the sweet spot

Polycarbonate is a tough, flexible plastic used in everything from riot shields to eyeglass lenses. In luggage it is the material to want because it absorbs an impact by flexing and returning to shape rather than shattering — exactly what you need when a bag is thrown onto a conveyor. ABS: cheap, and it shows

ABS is the plastic most bargain hardsides are molded from. It is inexpensive and light, but it is more brittle — under a hard enough impact, especially in cold weather, it can crack rather than flex. If a hardside is suspiciously cheap, it is almost certainly ABS.

Aluminum: the luxury outlier

The trade-offs are real: they are heavy, they are expensive, and instead of flexing they dent — which some owners consider character and others consider damage.
