We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes a verdict, and we say so when the cheaper bag is the better buy. How this works.

The best luggage set is the one that costs less per piece than the bags would separately and still holds up trip after trip. We ranked seven best-selling sets the same way — shell material, weight, wheels, warranty and real per-piece value — no lab, no favorites, just the numbers and what owners consistently report.

For most travelers a hardside set in the mid-range is the sweet spot, which is why the value and overall picks sit near the top. If you only want molded shells, jump to our hardside luggage sets breakout; if three matched pieces is the goal, see the best 3-piece set. And before you buy, our hardside vs softside guide settles which shell suits how you travel.

Amazon Basics 3-Piece Hardside Spinner Set

The honest budget set. Three ABS hardside spinners for a fraction of a legacy-brand set, backed by Amazon's return policy. It will not survive a decade of hard checked-bag use — ABS is more brittle than polycarbonate — but for occasional trips it is the best money-per-trip set here.

The one to think twice about. A dirt-cheap ABS set that photographs well and sells in huge numbers, but the thin shell and basic wheels sit below every other set here. Fine for a one-off trip or a dorm move; do not expect it to survive years of real travel.

What a luggage set is really buying you

A set wins on math, not magic. Buy a carry-on, a medium and a large check bag separately and you pay three retail prices; a matched set usually lands well under that, and the pieces nest inside each other for storage. The catch is that a set commits you to one brand's wheels and zippers across every size, so shell and hardware quality matter more, not less. Judge a set on its weakest piece — that is the one that fails first.

Hardside or softside for a set?

Hardside sets (polycarbonate is the material to want, ABS the budget compromise) wipe clean, resist rain and protect fragile contents, but every piece is fixed-volume and shows scuffs. Softside sets flex to overstuff, usually add exterior pockets, and tend to weigh less — at the cost of weather resistance. Neither wins outright; the honest trade-off is laid out in our hardside vs softside guide and the materials guide.

What we would actually buy

For most people the Samsonite Winfield 3 set is the safe default — a real polycarbonate shell and a 10-year warranty. Want to spend less? The Coolife set is the value play, and the SwissGear Sion is the softside choice. The one to think twice about is the Rockland Melbourne: it is cheap for a reason, and its thin ABS shell and basic wheels will not survive the abuse a set takes over years.

How we picked

We did not lab-test these bags

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty suitcases. We have not lab-tested any of these, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled each bag's published specifications, checked its dimensions against the airline sizers, ran the cost-per-trip and weight-to-capacity math, read the aggregated owner reviews, and scored every pick against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — not measurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we will not pretend we do. Where a number came from someone else's work, we name them in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is it cheaper to buy a luggage set or separate bags?
Usually a set. Buying a carry-on, medium and large bag from the same line separately almost always costs more than the matched set, and the pieces nest for storage. The trade-off is that you are locked into one brand's wheels and zippers across every size.
What sizes come in a luggage set?
Most 3-piece sets pair a carry-on (around 20–21 in), a mid-size checked bag (24–25 in) and a large checked bag (28–30 in); two-piece sets usually drop the middle. Confirm the carry-on piece fits your airline in our carry-on size by airline table.
Are luggage sets worth it?
If you need more than one bag, yes — the per-piece price is lower and the pieces match and nest. If you only ever travel carry-on, skip the set and put the money into one great carry-on instead.
Hardside or softside luggage set?
Hardside protects fragile contents, wipes clean and resists rain; softside is lighter and flexes to overstuff. Most travelers are happier with a hardside set. The full trade-off is in our hardside vs softside guide.
How many pieces do I actually need?
Two covers most people: a carry-on for short trips and one checked bag for longer ones. A third large case earns its place only if you take long trips, travel as a family, or pack bulky gear.

We do not run a testing lab, and we do not pretend to. Specifications come from the manufacturer's own listing or manual, and size and weight limits from the airline's official baggage-policy page.
