The best carry-on luggage for international travel

International carriers cap the cabin bag near 55 x 40 x 20 cm and actually weigh it, often at 7 kg. These six are ranked on the two numbers that decide whether you board without a fee: empty weight and true outer size.

Buying a carry-on for international travel is a different problem from buying one for domestic flights, and almost every roundup gets it wrong by ignoring the part that actually costs you money: weight. US carriers publish no cabin-bag weight limit for most fares. Much of Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East caps you at 7 to 10 kg — and that figure includes the empty suitcase.

So we ranked these six on empty weight first and true outer dimensions second, then on the usual durability criteria. A 3.5 kg hardside on a 7 kg allowance leaves you 3.5 kg of clothes; a 2.5 kg softside leaves you 4.5 kg. That is the entire difference between packing for a week and packing for four days, decided before you buy. Read international carry-on size limits for the regional patterns, then pick from below.

The second trap is depth. European low-cost carriers converge on 20 cm against the US standard's 23 cm, and depth is exactly where an expandable bag grows. Everything here is a 20- or 21-inch case or a soft bag that compresses — nothing that needs its expansion zipper open to be useful.

Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX Carry-On Spinner

The best all-round international pick. The 20-inch size is the one that clears strict European sizers where a 22-inch US bag gets stopped, the shell is genuine polycarbonate rather than ABS, and Samsonite's 10-year warranty plus its repair network mean a wheel failure abroad is fixable rather than fatal.

Amazon Basics 21-Inch Hardside Carry-On

The honest budget answer, with an honest caveat. It rolls, it locks, it costs a fraction of everything above — but it is an ABS shell at 21 inches, so it is both the least protective and the most likely to be stopped by a strict European sizer. Fine for occasional trips; wrong as a frequent flyer's bag.

Pros

  • 20-inch case clears strict overseas sizers a 22-inch bag fails
  • Full polycarbonate shell flexes under impact instead of cracking
  • Built-in TSA lock and dual spinner wheels
  • 10-year limited warranty with a global service network

Cons

  • Heavier than a softside bag on a 7 kg allowance
  • Glossy shell shows scuffs and fingerprints quickly

Don't buy this if…

you fly 7 kg-limit carriers regularly — a light softside bag gives you back a kilo of packing.

The reason this tops an international list rather than a domestic one is the 20-inch size. Most US buyers default to a 22-inch case because it is the domestic standard, then discover that a 22-inch bag measured with wheels sits above the 55 cm height most European and Asia-Pacific carriers publish. The 20-inch Winfield takes that argument off the table.

You pay for that compliance in weight — polycarbonate hardside cases are not light, and on a strict 7 kg carrier this bag consumes a meaningful share of the allowance before you pack. If your flying is mostly Europe on 10 kg allowances, that is a fine trade for the protection and the warranty. If it is mostly 7 kg carriers, look at the Maxlite below instead.

  • Among the lightest carry-ons sold — the single biggest factor on capped allowances
  • Soft shell squeezes into a tight sizer where a hard shell jams

Weight is the international variable

Domestically you can ignore cabin-bag weight; internationally you cannot. Carriers across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East commonly enforce 7 kg, and European carriers run 8–15 kg depending on airline and fare. Because that figure includes the empty case, every 500 g of suitcase is 500 g of clothes you do not get to bring. Weigh your empty bag on a bathroom scale before the first trip — published weights sometimes describe a different size in the range.

Size: 20 inches is the safe number

The US 22 x 14 x 9 in standard translates to roughly 56 x 36 x 23 cm, which is taller and deeper than several international allowances. A 20-inch case is the size that boards nearly everywhere. The specific dimension that fails is usually depth, where budget European carriers cap at 20 cm — so never fly them with the expansion zipper open. Full detail in our international carry-on size guide.

Hard or soft for overseas?

Softside wins on the two things international travel punishes: it is lighter, and it compresses into a tight sizer. Hardside wins on protection and weather. If you fly 7 kg carriers, take the weight. If you fly European full-service airlines with generous allowances and carry anything fragile, take the shell. The hardside vs softside guide lays the trade out in full.

What we would actually buy

For most international travelers, the 20-inch Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX — it clears the sizers and the warranty travels with you. If your airlines weigh bags at 7 kg, the Travelpro Maxlite 5 instead, and accept the softer shell. If you work on the road, the LEVEL8 Grace for the front laptop compartment.

How we picked

We did not lab-test these bags

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty suitcases. We have not lab-tested any of these, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled each bag's published specifications, checked its dimensions against the airline sizers, ran the cost-per-trip and weight-to-capacity math, read the aggregated owner reviews, and scored every pick against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — not measurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we will not pretend we do. Where a number came from someone else's work, we name them in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

What size carry-on is best for international travel?
A 20-inch case, or roughly 55 x 40 x 20 cm including wheels, boards on the widest range of carriers. A standard US 22-inch bag is often too tall or too deep for strict European and Asia-Pacific sizers. See our international carry-on size guide.
How much can an international carry-on weigh?
Commonly 7 to 10 kg including the empty suitcase, though European full-service carriers are often more generous. Seven kilograms is the strictest common limit and is normal across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, which is why empty weight leads our ranking.
Is hardside or softside better for international flights?
Softside is usually the better international choice because it is lighter and compresses into a tight gate sizer. Hardside protects fragile contents better and handles rain. The full trade-off is in our hardside vs softside guide.
Will my US carry-on fit on European airlines?
Often, but not on the budget carriers. Ryanair and easyJet cap cabin-bag depth around 20 cm against the US standard's 23 cm, and a 22-inch bag measured with wheels can exceed the 55 cm height limit. A 20-inch case avoids the argument.
Do airlines really weigh carry-on bags?
Internationally, frequently — especially carriers with a 7 kg allowance, where scales at check-in or the gate are routine. US domestic carriers rarely weigh cabin bags because most publish no cabin weight limit at all.
