Do you actually need three pieces?

A 3-piece set makes sense if you use all three sizes: the carry-on for weekends, the mid-size bag for a week, and the large case for long or family trips. If two of the three will live in a closet, you are paying for storage. Be honest about how you travel — a great carry-on plus one checked bag beats a cheap trio you half-use. Judge the set on its weakest piece

The large checked bag takes the worst beating — it is heaviest, gets thrown hardest, and travels full. A set is only as good as that piece, so look at shell material and wheel quality there, not on the carry-on that stays in the cabin. A blended or thin ABS shell that is fine on a 20-inch cabin bag can crack on a packed 28-inch case.
