A weekender is the soft bag you grab for two or three nights: big enough for a change of clothes and a dopp kit, small enough to carry by hand or drop at your feet. The best ones add a trolley sleeve and a shoe pocket.

Leather looks best and lasts longest but costs more and weighs more; a good synthetic duffel is lighter and cheaper. If you want the premium end, see best luxury travel bags. If you prefer straps on your shoulders, our carry-on backpacks are the alternative, and how to pack a carry-on helps a soft bag hold more.

The best all-round weekender. A separate zip shoe compartment keeps dirty soles off your clothes, a trolley sleeve slides over a roller's handle so you are not shouldering it through the airport, and the striped liner and clean look are unmistakably Herschel.

The women's leather pick. Real cowhide that softens with use, a size scaled for a two-night trip, and a cotton lining with enough interior pockets to stay organized. Genuine leather is heavier and needs occasional care, but it ages better than any coated bag.

The sharp-looking one, with an honest asterisk. This is a coated leather-look finish, not full-grain hide, so it photographs like a luxury duffel at a fraction of the price - but coated materials can crack or peel over years of use. Buy it for the look.

The one feature that matters: how it travels

A duffel is easy to fill and easy to carry, but the detail that separates a good weekender from a sack is how it moves through an airport. A trolley sleeve - a band on the back that slides over the extended handle of a wheeled carry-on - lets the duffel ride on top of your roller instead of digging into your shoulder, and it is the feature we would not give up. A separate shoe compartment is the runner-up: it keeps dirty soles away from folded clothes, which is more useful than it sounds after one rainy trip. The Herschel Novel and the budget BAGSMART both have both features; the leather bags trade them for looks.

Leather or synthetic?

Leather weekenders look richer, feel better in the hand, and - if the leather is genuine - age into something with character. The costs are real: they are heavier, they need occasional conditioning, and good hide is expensive. Watch the wording, too. "Genuine leather" means real hide but not top quality; a "leather-look" or coated bag like the Kenneth Cole is a synthetic finish that can crack or peel with age. A quality synthetic duffel such as the Herschel is lighter, cheaper, weatherproof and zero-maintenance - it just will not develop a patina. If you want the full leather story, our luxury travel bags page breaks down the grades.

What we would actually buy

For most people the Herschel Novel is the smart weekender: roomy, well organized, and easy to move through an airport thanks to the trolley sleeve and shoe compartment. Want real leather? The Kattee is the standout for its price. On a tight budget, the Wrangler is the honest no-frills pick and the BAGSMART gets you a shoe compartment for less. We would steer past the Kenneth Cole unless you specifically want the leather look and accept it is a coated finish.

How we picked

We did not lab-test these bags

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty suitcases. We have not lab-tested any of these, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled each bag's published specifications, checked its dimensions against the airline sizers, ran the cost-per-trip and weight-to-capacity math, read the aggregated owner reviews, and scored every pick against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — not measurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we will not pretend we do. Where a number came from someone else's work, we name them in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

What size is a weekender bag?
A weekender typically holds roughly 30 to 45 liters - enough for two to three nights of clothes plus a dopp kit. That is smaller than a full carry-on but larger than a gym bag. Most fit the overhead bin, though an overstuffed duffel can push past airline limits.
Is genuine leather worth it for a weekender?
If you value looks and longevity and do not mind the weight and occasional care, yes - real leather ages well and lasts for years. If you want light, cheap and maintenance-free, a good synthetic duffel is the better buy. The full leather-grade breakdown is on our luxury travel bags page.
What is a trolley sleeve and do I need one?
A trolley sleeve is a fabric band on the back of the bag that slides over the extended handle of a wheeled carry-on, so the duffel rides on top of your roller instead of on your shoulder. If you ever pair a duffel with a wheeled bag - see our carry-on picks - it is worth having.
Does a weekender count as a carry-on or a personal item?
A smaller weekender can slip under the seat as a personal item, while a larger one is carry-on sized for the overhead bin - it depends on the bag and how full it is. Check the dimensions against our personal item size by airline table.
