Hardside · Hardside Luggage

The best luggage brands, judged on what they actually deliver

Brand matters in luggage for exactly two reasons: what the warranty covers, and whether anyone will honor it. Six brands ranked on both, each with the one bag we would buy from it.

Almost every "best luggage brands" list ranks brands on prestige. That is the wrong axis. In luggage, brand matters for exactly two reasons, and neither is prestige: what the warranty covers, and whether there is a service operation that will actually honor it. A ten-year warranty from a company with no repair network is a piece of paper. A ten-year warranty from a company with authorized repair centers in most cities is a product feature.

Everything else — shell material, wheels, weight — is a property of the individual bag, not the brand. Samsonite makes excellent polycarbonate cases and also makes value-line bags with ordinary shells. So this page does two things: ranks the six brands worth considering on warranty and service reality, and names the one bag we would buy from each, so the ranking is actionable rather than abstract.

A note on who is missing. The premium direct-to-consumer names — Away, Monos, Rimowa, Béis — are genuinely good and are covered in our comparison pages, but they are not sold on Amazon and this page ranks brands you can buy today with a warranty you can use. Tumi and Briggs & Riley sit above this price band. Everything below is a brand you can order this afternoon.

One last framing rule. The right brand depends on how often you fly. Below a few trips a year, the value brands are the rational choice and the premium warranty is headroom you will never use. Above monthly, the durability brands cost less per trip. That is the axis this ranking is really built on.

Warranty length is the least useful number on the box

Every luggage brand prints a warranty term and almost none of them mean the same thing. Three questions separate a real warranty from decoration:

  1. Does it cover airline damage? Almost universally no — Travelpro is the notable exception. This matters, because airline handling is what actually breaks luggage.
  2. Where do you take it? An authorized repair center you can drive to beats mailing a suitcase across the country, which beats a brand with no service operation at all.
  3. What does a claim require? Most claims stall on proof of purchase and registration rather than eligibility. Register the bag the week it arrives.

Brand tells you less than the individual bag

Samsonite makes genuine 100% polycarbonate cases and also makes ABS-blend value bags. Delsey runs flagship and budget lines side by side. Reading the brand off the badge and stopping there is how people end up with a disappointing bag from a good maker.

Check three specs on the individual product before you buy: shell material (polycarbonate, not "hardshell" — our materials guide explains why), empty weight, and external dimensions including wheels against our airline size table. Those three settle most purchases regardless of the name on the front.

Which brand for which traveler

  • You fly monthly or more: Travelpro. The warranty terms and softside durability are built for exactly that.
  • You want a hard shell and long-term repairability: Samsonite.
  • You want a bag that looks good without a direct-to-consumer price: Delsey.
  • You fly two or three times a year: American Tourister. Spend the difference on the trip.
  • You carry work gear: SwissGear, for the pockets.
  • You care how it looks and accept the service risk: LEVEL8.

What we would actually buy

If someone asked for one bag with no other information, it would be the Travelpro Maxlite 5 — lightest, best warranty, mid-tier price. If they said they wanted a hard shell, the Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX. If they said they wanted it to look good, the LEVEL8 Grace. Those three answers cover the overwhelming majority of luggage purchases, and two of the three have a full review on this site: the Maxlite 5 and the LEVEL8 Grace. The Winfield leads our Samsonite roundup.

How we picked

We did not lab-test these bags

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty suitcases. We have not lab-tested any of these, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled each bag's published specifications, checked its dimensions against the airline sizers, ran the cost-per-trip and weight-to-capacity math, read the aggregated owner reviews, and scored every pick against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — not measurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we will not pretend we do. Where a number came from someone else's work, we name them in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best luggage brand?
It depends on how often you fly. Travelpro has the best warranty terms and the lightest bags; Samsonite has the largest repair network and the best hardside shells; Delsey has the best design at a sane price; American Tourister is the best value brand because Samsonite's service infrastructure sits behind it.
Which luggage brand lasts the longest?
Travelpro and Samsonite have the strongest long-run records, for different reasons — Travelpro on softside construction and warranty coverage, Samsonite on polycarbonate shells and repairability. In practice, the brand with parts availability lasts longest, because luggage fails at replaceable parts.
Is expensive luggage worth it?
Above roughly monthly travel, yes — premium bags cost less per trip because they survive many more of them. Below that, the value brands are the rational choice. Our budget sets roundup is built entirely around that arithmetic.
Which luggage brands cover airline damage?
Travelpro is the notable one — its limited lifetime warranty includes coverage for airline-inflicted damage on many claims. Most competitors, including Samsonite, explicitly exclude it, which makes airline damage a claim against the carrier instead.
Is American Tourister the same as Samsonite?
American Tourister is owned by Samsonite and operates as its value line. The bags use lower-grade shells and shorter warranties, but the parent company's service infrastructure is behind them — which is why we rank it above unaffiliated budget brands. Our American Tourister range ranks the individual lines.
