The best luggage sets for men

There is no such thing as men's luggage. There are three published specs that matter more if you are tall, pack heavy, and would rather not own a bag covered in scuffs - and almost nobody ranks on them.

By Stephen V.Updated How we test
#ad

We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes a verdict, and we say so when the cheaper bag is the better buy. How this works.

The best luggage set for most men is the Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX two-piece set: a 100% polycarbonate shell, dual spinner wheels, integrated TSA locks and a 10-year limited warranty sitting on the largest repair and spare-parts network in luggage - in a two-piece configuration that deliberately avoids the mistake this page exists to warn about. If weight is the thing you notice, the Travelpro Maxlite 5 softside two-piece set is the alternative, with a carry-on that publishes around 5.4 lb empty and a limited lifetime warranty that names wheels, zippers and handles.

Let us be straight about the premise: there is no men's luggage. Manufacturers do not build a gendered suitcase, and any page that claims otherwise is selling you a color. What is true is that three published specs matter more if you are taller than average, pack to the weight limit rather than to the volume, and do not want to own a bag that looks beaten after four trips. Those three are the ranking.

Handle height. A telescoping handle has a fixed top stop, and it is set for an average user. If you are over about six feet you have spent years walking slightly stooped behind a bag, which is a posture problem and also a durability problem - a bag towed at the wrong angle takes side loads through the wheel mounts. Multi-stop and extended-height handles exist and are worth seeking out.

The 62-linear-inch ceiling on the large piece. This is the real one, and it is where the men's-set market loses money. Nearly every US carrier caps a checked bag at 62 linear inches (length plus width plus depth) and 50 lb. A 28-inch case gets close to the first number and blows through the second long before it is full: American Tourister publishes 32.5 x 18.5 x 12.5 in for its Stratum 3.0 large spinner, which is 63.5 linear inches - over the limit before you pack anything. Meanwhile a 24 to 25-inch medium case publishes around 55 linear inches and hits 50 lb at roughly the point it is full. Buying the biggest set available is the default male purchase in this category and it is usually the wrong one.

A shell that hides handling marks. Gloss polycarbonate shows every scuff a baggage belt leaves. Micro-diamond and textured shells hide them, which is why the textured sets below rank above the gloss ones on anything you plan to check repeatedly.

If you want the same category ranked on the overhead lift and on design, our sets for women page uses those criteria instead. For the general ranking on cost per piece, see best luggage sets, and for two adults sharing, sets for couples.

Every product here is one the site has already researched on its own roundup - the scores are the scores it earned there, and the verdicts are rewritten for this brief. Dimensions and weights are the manufacturers' published figures; we have not lab-tested any of these. See how we test.

Pros

  • Full polycarbonate shells resist cracking and wipe clean
  • Matched carry-on and checked bag that nest for storage
  • Smooth dual spinner wheels and fixed TSA locks
  • Backed by Samsonite's 10-year limited warranty

Cons

  • A two-piece set, so no mid-size bag for week-long trips
  • Glossy shell shows scuffs and fingerprints

Don't buy this if…

…you need three pieces today for three people - this is one traveler's set, and the Omni 2 three-piece below is the family-scale answer.

Two things make this the default recommendation. The first is that the sizes are published honestly and both are usable: a cabin case at 22.25 x 14.5 x 9.5 in overall - which is a quarter inch over the US convention and worth knowing before a strict-sizer flight - and a 25-inch medium at 55.65 linear inches, comfortably inside 62 and able to reach 50 lb at about the point it is full.

The second is the service network. Samsonite's 10-year limited warranty is narrower than Briggs & Riley's guarantee on paper, but it sits on a parts and repair operation no other brand matches, which turns the common failure - a wheel - into a part order rather than a replacement purchase. The gloss shell does scuff; the textured Omni 2 below is the answer if that bothers you. Full range and warranty terms in our Samsonite roundup, and the single-bag write-up is here.

Pros

  • Among the lightest softside luggage sold — matters on weight-capped airlines
  • Limited lifetime warranty from the brand flight crews buy
  • Both pieces expand for the trip home
  • External pockets take a laptop and liquids without opening the case

Cons

  • Two pieces only — no mid-size bag for week-long trips
  • Polyester scuffs faster than ballistic nylon

Don't buy this if…

…you check these bags in bad weather - softside absorbs what a shell sheds, and a fabric case comes off a wet carousel wet.

Empty weight is the only part of a 50 lb allowance you can buy back, and softside is where you buy it. Every pound the case does not weigh is a pound of belongings that stays under the limit, which is why this set ranks second on a page about packing heavy rather than last. Two pieces, both expandable, both light.

Do the registration. The limited lifetime warranty applies regardless, but the Trusted Companion Promise - the half that covers damage caused by an airline, which is how most bags actually break - only starts if you register inside 120 days of buying it. Terms in our warranties guide; the softside field in full in best softside luggage sets.

Pros

  • Textured polycarbonate hides scuffs and fingerprints across all three bags
  • Matched carry-on, medium and large that nest for storage
  • Spinner wheels and TSA locks on every piece
  • Samsonite's 10-year limited warranty

Cons

  • Heavier than softside sets across three pieces
  • Costs more than the value and budget sets here

Don't buy this if…

…you are buying a 28-inch case expecting to fill it - at 50 lb you will not, and the two-piece Winfield above is the more honest purchase for one traveler.

Texture is an underrated specification. A micro-diamond shell does not resist damage any better than a gloss one, but it does not advertise it either - and since nothing you can buy prevents a baggage system from scuffing a case, hiding the marks is the only available win. Samsonite publishes 9.0 lb empty and 55.25 linear inches for the Omni 2 24-inch medium, which is the piece in this set you will use most.

Three pieces is the right call when more than one person travels with the set, or when you want a medium and a large for genuinely different trip lengths. For one traveler it is usually one case too many - our three-piece set page works through when the third piece earns its place, and best 24-inch luggage makes the case for the medium over the large in detail.

Samsonite's value brand doing the same job for less. Three pieces - carry-on, medium and large - in a textured ABS shell that, like the Omni 2's texture, hides handling marks better than gloss, with spinner wheels, a published 1-inch expansion and American Tourister's 10-year limited warranty behind it. American Tourister publishes 54.6 linear inches and 8.75 lb empty for the Stratum 2.0 24-inch medium.

Pros

  • Carry-on, medium and large in one purchase, matched
  • Every case expands an inch rather than just the largest
  • Interior organization is better than the price suggests
  • Cheapest cost-per-bag of anything we track from this brand

Cons

  • ABS is the least impact-resistant of the common hard shells
  • You are committing to one finish across three bags for years

Don't buy this if…

…you want full polycarbonate - the shell here is textured ABS, which is more brittle under a hard impact, and the Winfield 3 DLX above is the polycarbonate purchase.

The spec worth knowing is the one that is easy to get wrong: this shell is textured ABS, per American Tourister's own published specifications, not polycarbonate. ABS is lighter on cost and holds its color well; it is also less willing to flex under impact and more inclined to crack where polycarbonate springs back. On a bag you check a handful of times a year that is a reasonable trade. On one you check monthly it is not.

The 54.6 linear inches on the medium is the number to pay attention to - that is seven inches of headroom under the 62-inch ceiling, which is where you want to be. The full American Tourister range, including the carry-ons that publish over 22 x 14 x 9 in, is in our American Tourister roundup.

The lightest shell on this page. Pros

  • Freeform carry-on is one of the lightest molded cases Samsonite makes
  • Both pieces are bags you would buy individually — no filler
  • 10-year limited warranty and the largest repair network in luggage
  • Full-zip interior with cross straps on both cases

Cons

  • By far the most expensive set here per piece
  • The large checked case is easy to overpack past the 50 lb airline limit

Don't buy this if…

…the large piece is the one you will actually use - a Freeform large hits 50 lb well before it is full, and a medium-plus-cabin pairing is the better configuration.

Polypropylene is the under-discussed third hardside material. It is lighter than polycarbonate and more flexible than ABS; what it gives up is stiffness, so the shell deflects more under a point load. For a bag you want light and do not plan to sit on, it is a sound choice, and it is the reason this set weighs what it does. Our polypropylene vs polycarbonate guide has the comparison properly.

The configuration caveat is the same as everywhere on this page: this is a carry-on plus a large case, and large cases are the ones that run out of allowance before they run out of space. If you only ever check one bag, look at the two-piece sets with a 24 or 25-inch medium instead. The single-bag review is here.

Pros

  • Genuinely premium finish — the only set here that does not look like luggage-aisle luggage
  • Quiet double spinner wheels, the feature owners mention most
  • Textured shell resists scuffing better than glossy legacy cases
  • Built-in TSA-recognized locks on both pieces

Cons

  • The most expensive set on this page, from the brand with the shortest service record
  • The 28-inch case invites overpacking past the checked weight limit
  • Per-piece value is the weakest here

Don't buy this if…

…you need a service network - LEVEL8 competes on design and price, and when a wheel goes you are on your own in a way you are not with Samsonite.

We have kept this set on the page rather than dropping it, because it is genuinely good-looking and widely bought, and because it makes the 28-inch point better than any amount of prose. Twenty-eight inches is the size men reach for and the size that punishes them: the 50 lb limit arrives first, the 62-linear-inch limit is close behind, and the result is a half-empty case that still costs an overweight fee.

If you want the aesthetic and not the problem, LEVEL8's zipperless aluminum-frame cabin bags are the stronger expression of the same design language - our LEVEL8 Grace review and zipperless luggage guide cover them. The published numbers that decide this, in one table

Manufacturer figures from the live listings, not measurements we took. Linear inches is length plus width plus depth - the number nearly every US carrier caps at 62 for a checked bag.

CasePublished linear inchesPublished empty weightShell
American Tourister Stratum 2.0, 24-inch medium54.6 in8.75 lbTextured ABS
Samsonite Omni 2, 24-inch medium55.25 in9.0 lbMicro-diamond polycarbonate
Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX, 25-inch medium55.65 in9.3 lb100% polycarbonate
American Tourister Stratum 3.0, 28-inch large63.5 in10.98 lbHardside

Read the last row twice. A popular 28-inch case publishes 63.5 linear inches, which is over the 62-inch ceiling empty - before a single shirt goes in, before the 1.5-inch expansion is used. That is the trap. The three medium cases above all sit six to seven inches inside the limit and will reach 50 lb at about the point they are full, which is the definition of the right size. Our checked bag size and weight limits guide has the caps by carrier.

Handle height, and how to check it before you buy

Published handle heights are rare, so use the proxies. A "multi-stop" or "multiple locking positions" handle gives you a top stop you can actually use; a single-stop handle gives you the manufacturer's guess. American Tourister publishes a RightHeight handle on parts of the Stratum 3.0 range, and Travelpro publishes a multi-stop contoured handle on Platinum Elite. Where no handle spec is published - which is most of this category - assume a single stop set for an average user. If you are tall and the set you want does not say, a 25-inch case gives you more handle than a 22-inch one simply because the tube is longer.

Two pieces or three

Three pieces is right when more than one person uses the set, or when you genuinely take both four-day trips and two-week trips. Two pieces is right for one traveler, almost always - and the pairing to want is a cabin bag plus a 24 or 25-inch medium, not a cabin bag plus a 28. A three-piece set is also the better purchase when the pieces nest, because three nested cases occupy one closet and three separate ones occupy a room; our luggage storage guide covers that, and are luggage sets worth it works through the arithmetic of buying a set at all.

What to buy instead of a set

If you already own a carry-on you like, you do not want a set - you want one checked case, and buying a set means paying for a cabin bag you will not use. That is the most common mistake in this category after the 28-inch one. Go to best 24-inch luggage or best checked luggage and buy one case. If the cabin bag is what you actually need, carry-ons for men ranks that decision on handle height and capacity, and best softside carry-on covers the fabric options.

Colorways, honestly

Matte black and charcoal are the default for a reason - they hide marks and they are unobjectionable. They are also indistinguishable from every other bag on the carousel, which costs you minutes on arrival and occasionally costs someone else your suitcase. The fix is not a louder bag; it is a tag and a tracker, which together cost a fraction of the set. Our guide to making your luggage stand out covers the cheap version, and best luggage tags and best luggage trackers rank the hardware.

How we picked

We did not lab-test these bags

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty suitcases. We have not lab-tested any of these, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled each bag's published specifications, checked its dimensions against the airline sizers, ran the cost-per-trip and weight-to-capacity math, read the aggregated owner reviews, and scored every pick against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — not measurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we will not pretend we do. Where a number came from someone else's work, we name them in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is there such a thing as men's luggage?
Not as a product category - manufacturers do not build a gendered suitcase, and a set marketed to men is usually just a darker colorway. What differs in practice is which published specs matter: handle height if you are tall, the 62-linear-inch and 50 lb checked limits if you pack heavy, and a textured rather than gloss shell if you check bags often. That is what this page ranks on.
What size luggage set should a man buy?
For one traveler, a two-piece set with a cabin bag and a 24 or 25-inch medium. Those mediums publish around 55 linear inches - well inside the 62-inch checked ceiling - and they reach the 50 lb weight limit at roughly the point they are full. A 28-inch large case does the opposite: American Tourister publishes 63.5 linear inches for its Stratum 3.0 large, over the limit empty, and you will hit 50 lb long before you fill it.
Are 28-inch suitcases too big?
For most travelers, yes. The 50 lb weight limit on a US checked bag arrives well before a 28-inch case is full, so you end up paying an overweight fee on a half-empty suitcase - or carrying dead volume. A 28 makes sense for bulky, light cargo: winter coats, bedding, sports kit. For clothes, a 24 or 25-inch medium is the size you can actually fill.
Which luggage has the tallest handle?
Published handle heights are rare in this category, so look for the spec words instead: a multi-stop or multiple-position handle lets you set the height, where a single-stop handle fixes it at the manufacturer's average. Travelpro publishes a multi-stop contoured handle on Platinum Elite and American Tourister publishes a RightHeight handle on parts of the Stratum 3.0 range. Where nothing is published, a larger case gives you a longer tube and therefore more height.
Hardside or softside for a men's luggage set?
Hardside if you check bags in bad weather or pack anything fragile, because the shell wipes clean and spreads impact around the contents. Softside if you pack to the 50 lb limit, because every pound the empty case does not weigh is a pound of belongings that stays under the cap - the Travelpro Maxlite carry-on publishes around 5.4 lb against roughly 7 lb for comparable shells. Texture beats gloss in either format if the bag gets checked.
