Carry-On · Carry-On Luggage

The best carry-on luggage for men

The priorities behind this search are consistent: a bag that survives weekly flying, carries a laptop and a suit without creasing either, and comes with a warranty worth having. Ranked on exactly that.

We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes a verdict, and we say so when the cheaper bag is the better buy. How this works.

Same honesty as the companion page: luggage is not a gendered product, and several bags here also appear on our women's list. What differs is the brief. This search skews heavily toward business travel, so we ranked on durability under frequent flying, laptop and garment capacity, wheel quality and warranty — the things that decide whether a bag survives forty trips a year.

That reordering genuinely changes the answer. On the general roundup the lightest bag wins; here the professional-grade one does, because a bag flying weekly meets more curbs, more conveyors and more overstuffing than one flying twice a year. Cost per trip, not sticker price, is the right lens — and at forty trips a year a $390 bag with a lifetime warranty is cheaper than three $130 bags.

If you want the field ranked on weight and value instead, start with the flagship roundup.

Pros

  • Ballistic nylon is the most abrasion-resistant fabric on this page
  • Self-aligning wheels track straight instead of wandering
  • Contour grip handle is genuinely more comfortable on long walks
  • Limited lifetime warranty from the brand flight crews buy themselves

Cons

  • By far the most expensive pick here
  • Overkill if you fly a handful of times a year

Don't buy this if…

you travel occasionally — the Maxlite 5 gives you most of this for a fraction of the price.

The case for the Platinum Elite is entirely about frequency. Fly twice a year and almost any bag on this site will outlive your interest in it. Fly weekly and you discover what ballistic nylon, sealed wheel bearings and a real warranty are actually for — this is a bag designed to be repaired rather than replaced, which is why it is disproportionately common among crew.

The features that matter day to day are unglamorous: a handle that does not vibrate when you walk fast, wheels that go where you point them, and an external pocket you can reach at the gate without opening the case. None of that photographs well, and all of it is why the bag costs what it does.

Buy for your flight frequency, not your budget

This is the single most useful reframing on the page. Divide the price by a realistic number of trips before the bag dies. A $50 case that survives eight trips costs more per trip than a $390 Platinum Elite that survives two hundred. If you fly monthly for work, buy once at the top of your range; if you fly twice a year, buying near the top is genuinely wasted money.

Suits, laptops and what actually fits

A carry-on will take a folded suit reasonably well if you use the fold-over method and pack it last, but no 20-inch case will keep one crisp across three flights. If you present in a suit regularly, a dedicated garment bag is the honest answer rather than a bigger suitcase. For laptops, a front-opening compartment (the LEVEL8 here) or a good external pocket (both Travelpros) matters more than raw capacity.

Softside or hardside for business travel

Softside is the frequent-flyer default because it overstuffs into a tight bin, adds an external laptop pocket, and weighs less — which is why both Travelpros lead this list. Hardside wins if you carry fragile equipment or want the cleaner look in a client-facing setting. The hardside vs softside guide has the full argument.

What we would actually buy

Flying weekly: the Platinum Elite, without much hesitation. Flying monthly or less: the Maxlite 5, which shares the warranty and most of the competence. Carrying a laptop through security three times a day: the LEVEL8 Grace. Carrying fragile gear: the Winfield 3 DLX.

How we picked

We did not lab-test these bags

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty suitcases. We have not lab-tested any of these, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled each bag's published specifications, checked its dimensions against the airline sizers, ran the cost-per-trip and weight-to-capacity math, read the aggregated owner reviews, and scored every pick against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — not measurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we will not pretend we do. Where a number came from someone else's work, we name them in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best carry-on for business travel?
For frequent business travel, a softside bag in abrasion-resistant fabric with a strong warranty — the Travelpro Platinum Elite is the standout here, with the Maxlite 5 as the value alternative. Both take a laptop in an external pocket and overstuff into a tight overhead bin.
Can you fit a suit in a carry-on?
Yes, folded, though it will not stay crisp across multiple flights. Pack it last using the fold-over method. If you wear a suit on arrival regularly, a dedicated garment bag is the better tool.
Is an expensive carry-on worth it?
It depends entirely on how often you fly. Divided over trips, a premium bag with a lifetime warranty is frequently cheaper per trip than replacing budget bags. Fly a couple of times a year and that math never pays back.
Hardside or softside for a business trip?
Softside for most frequent flyers — lighter, overstuffs into a full bin, and usually adds an external laptop pocket. Hardside if you carry fragile equipment. See our hardside vs softside guide.
What size carry-on should I buy for work travel?
A 21 or 22-inch case for US domestic flying, or 20 inches if you also fly internationally, where sizers are stricter. Our carry-on size by airline table has the exact published limits.
