Away vs Samsonite: is the premium worth it?
A design-led direct-to-consumer brand against the largest luggage maker in the world. Both build polycarbonate carry-ons. One costs roughly twice as much and you can only buy it from one place.
We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes a verdict, and we say so when the cheaper bag is the better buy. How this works.
This is the comparison that decides whether direct-to-consumer luggage is worth the money, because Away and Samsonite's Winfield 3 are genuinely similar products: both are polycarbonate hardside carry-ons on spinner wheels with a built-in TSA lock. What Away adds is a cleaner interior, a compression system, a 100-day trial, and an optional ejectable battery on some models. What Samsonite adds is that it costs meaningfully less and you can have it tomorrow.
One thing up front: Away is not sold on Amazon. Its buy link below goes direct to the brand and we earn nothing on it - we would rather point you at the right bag. Samsonite is widely stocked, so that link is a normal affiliate link. Both bags appear in context in our best hardside carry-on picks.

What the premium actually buys
Three things, and they are real. The interior finishis better - Away's lining, compression panel and included laundry bag are a step above the plain cross-straps in a Winfield 3. The 100-day trial is a genuine risk reducer you do not get buying a Samsonite from a third-party retailer. And the ejectable battery on some Away models is a legitimately useful feature that also keeps the bag compliant when a battery has to come out for a checked flight. What the premium does not buy is a tougher shell: both are polycarbonate, and both scratch.
Where Samsonite wins
Price, availability and service network. The Winfield 3 is one of the most heavily discounted premium hardsides in the market, it arrives in a day, and if something breaks there is a repair network that has existed for decades rather than a returns portal. For a bag that gets checked, that combination is hard to argue with - which is why the Winfield 3 turns up repeatedly in our Samsonite range roundup.
Who should buy which
Buy Away if you want the design, the better interior and the trial period, and the price difference does not change your decision. Buy the Samsonite Winfield 3 if you want the same shell material and a longer-established service network for a lot less money - and put the difference toward a second bag or a better checked case. If your real question is whether any premium direct-to-consumer carry-on is worth it, compare Away with its closest rival in Away vs Monos.

How we picked
We did not lab-test these bags
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty suitcases. We have not lab-tested any of these, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled each bag's published specifications, checked its dimensions against the airline sizers, ran the cost-per-trip and weight-to-capacity math, read the aggregated owner reviews, and scored every pick against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — not measurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we will not pretend we do. Where a number came from someone else's work, we name them in Sources.

We do not run a testing lab, and we do not pretend to. Specifications come from the manufacturer's own listing or manual, and size and weight limits from the airline's official baggage-policy page. Where we could not verify something, we say so on the page rather than quietly leaving it out. Read our full method.
